Celebrating the life of

Bonnie Jean Jackson Hiers

January 18, 1955 - November 13, 2025

Bonnie Jean Jackson Hiers

Bonnie Jean Jackson Hiers, lovingly known as Granny, passed away as the sun was rising over her beloved Tybee Island on November 13, 2025. Bonnie was born on January 18, 1955, to the late Henry and Louise Jackson. A native Tybeenian and the granddaughter of the last lighthouse keeper of the Tybee Island Light Station, the island was her heart and home — a place she cherished and where she spent most of her life. Bonnie’s greatest achievement was her unwavering dedication to her family. Her every priority was their well-being, especially the loving care and upbringing of her granddaughter, Emma.

With proud Scottish roots, her name Bonnie—meaning “beautiful,” “good,” and “beloved” in the old Scots tongue—could not have been more fitting. It reflected the kindness, grace, and quiet strength she shared so freely throughout her life. With a steady spirit and a heart full of love, Bonnie walked through this world, leaving warmth and light in every place she touched.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and soul mate, Bubba Hiers, and her brother, Henry Jackson.

She is survived by a son, Gus Cowart (Lynn), daughter, Laura Cowart (Chap); brother, Paul Jackson (Terry); grandchildren, Emma, Bradley (Kayla), Serena, Cameron, and Lane; great-grandchild, Oakie; several nephews, and dear friends.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Tybee Historical Society (Tybee Island Light Station), 30 Meddin Dr, Tybee Island, GA 31328, (912) 786-5801.

Bonnie was such a special part of my life. She picked me up from my very first plane ride into Savannah when I was in 7th or 8th grade, and from then on Tybee became my home away from home. She is the one who first sparked my love of hurricanes by taking me to get a WTOC tracking map. I will always be grateful for the summers and holidays I spent with her, Gus, and Laura. Even as I got older, she was still looking out for me, helping me get back to my first TV weather job when a flight was overbooked. I also loved seeing the bond she had with Emma Jean, who has grown into such a bright and kind 17 year old. Our families share so many wonderful memories. Bonnie will always be loved and remembered. Our sincerest condolences and prayers to Gus, Laura, Emma, cousin Paul and family. So sorry for your loss. Sweet cousin Bonnie was such a good person. Last January after my brother Craig's funeral we talked a lot about the good times we had at Tybee growing up together. She was loved and will be sorely missed by all. May she be in the arms of Jesus Christ for eternity.
